Punjab Revises Electric Taxi Scheme, Introduces Womens Quota
The Punjab government has officially revised its Electric Taxi Scheme, introducing a dedicated quota for women drivers for the first time. Under the updated plan, 100 electric taxis will be allotted to women through a ballot, while another 200 vehicles will go to male applicants, giving individual citizens a total of 300 EVs.
Previously, the scheme heavily favored corporate fleet owners, with only 100 taxis reserved for individuals and 1,000 interest-free vehicles assigned to companies. The new model significantly shifts the balance by cutting the corporate quota to 800 vehicles, increasing public access by nearly 200%.
Government Aims for Wider Public Participation
Officials say the revised structure is designed to support employment and empower women in the transport sector. According to provincial data, women currently represent less than 3% of registered commercial drivers in Punjab. The government hopes the initiative will encourage more women to join the profession.
Punjab’s Transport Minister stated that the updated plan not only promotes inclusivity but also strengthens the province’s transition toward environmentally friendly transportation.
Phase-Wise Rollout Across Punjab
The project will launch in phases, beginning in Lahore and divisional headquarters before expanding to larger cities. The Transport Department has already begun early groundwork and is in talks with multiple EV manufacturers.
Industry sources confirm that Deewan Group and NRTC are among the companies showing interest in supplying vehicles for the scheme.
24/7 Eco-Friendly Transport Expected
Once operational, the electric taxis are expected to run round-the-clock, offering cleaner and quieter mobility options. Punjab aims to mirror successful EV taxi models seen in countries like China, where electric fleets make up more than 70% of urban taxi services.
Summary
The Punjab government has revised its Electric Taxi Scheme, allocating 100 electric taxis to women for the first time and 200 to male drivers through balloting.
The update also reduces the corporate quota, increasing individual access as the project begins rolling out from Lahore.
