Islamabad to Introduce Mandatory E-Tag System for All Vehicles
The Islamabad administration has announced a new vehicle identification system that will soon become compulsory for anyone entering or travelling inside the capital. The move comes after months of discussions on improving traffic flow, reducing congestion, and strengthening security checks across the city.
Why Is Islamabad Introducing E-Tags?
Officials say Islamabad’s daily traffic load has increased sharply in the last few years. According to excise department estimates, over 200,000 vehicles enter the city every day from Rawalpindi, Taxila, Wah, and other nearby areas. Many of these cars use duplicate or unclear number plates, making verification difficult for authorities.
The new e-tag system aims to create a verified digital identity for every vehicle. Unlike number plates, which can be forged, an e-tag contains encrypted data that cannot be cloned or replaced.
M-Tag Will Also Work as E-Tag
People who already have a Motorway M-Tag won’t need to get a separate e-tag. The system will automatically integrate both, saving time and cost for regular motorway users.
Where Are Tags Being Issued?
A pilot phase has already started. Tags are currently available at:
-
Kachnar Park, I-8
-
Excise Office, H-8
From November 18, more collection points will open across Islamabad. Authorities say at least 10 locations will be operational in the first phase, and the number will increase depending on demand.
Cost and Requirements
The expected cost of the tag is around Rs. 250, making it affordable for the majority of commuters. To receive a tag, motorists must bring:
-
Original CNIC
-
Original vehicle registration book/card
Who Will Need an E-Tag?
Once the system is fully active:
-
Islamabad residents,
-
Daily commuters, and
-
Visitors from any city
Will all be required to have an e-tag or M-Tag before entering the capital.
Example: If a resident of Rawalpindi travels to Islamabad daily for office, an e-tag will allow automatic identification at checkpoints, reducing long queues. Similarly, a visitor coming from Lahore with an M-Tag will be recognized by the system without needing an additional tag.
Summary
Motorcycles will also be included in the next phase, as authorities plan to issue M-Tags for two-wheelers to ensure all vehicles on the road are digitally verified.
Islamabad is introducing a mandatory e-tag system for all vehicles to accurately identify residents, daily commuters, and newcomers. Motorway M-Tag will work as an e-tag, and new e-tags will be issued from November 18 at multiple locations across the city for around Rs. 250.
