If you’re driving anywhere in Punjab these days, it’s time to pay a little more attention to which lane you’re in. Punjab Traffic Police has announced a province wide crackdown on lane discipline, and officers have been told to take it seriously.
DIG Traffic Muhammad Waqas Nazir has directed all Chief Traffic Officers and District Traffic Officers to step up enforcement and roll out a bigger public awareness push. The message is simple: stick to your lane, or expect action.
So what exactly are they targeting? Three main things: driving in the wrong lane, constantly switching lanes without reason, and overtaking without signaling. These habits might seem minor to some drivers, but they’re a leading cause of road accidents and traffic jams across the province.
And the numbers back it up. According to the DIG, more than 627,000 actions have already been taken against lane violators this year alone with over 300,000 of those in Lahore. That’s a huge chunk, and it shows just how common this problem really is on our roads.
The DIG Traffic emphasized that proper lane discipline isn’t just about following rules for the sake of it directly improves traffic flow and keeps everyone safer. Drivers have been reminded to always use their indicators before changing lanes or overtaking, giving other motorists a heads-up.
Motorcyclists weren’t left out either. They’ve been specifically advised to stick to the left-most lane at all times, both for their own safety and to avoid disrupting the flow of traffic around them.
